The chestnuts have been falling off their trees for a few weeks now. Last week, another town across the Val d’Orcia had its chestnut festa. Today was Pienza’s turn.
Hundreds of people stood in line for up to an hour, sipping mulled spiced wine while the roasters went to work.
The first task is to get the fire good and hot.
Scoop the chestnuts up to feed the roaster.
Tumble them in the roaster for about 15 minutes.
When the shells crack, dump them out of the roaster.
Find a willing customer.....
No problem, there were hundreds.
Shuck the shells and enjoy.
Wonderful photodocumentation of the Chestnut Festival! You guys rock!

I can smell the fine roasted chestnut smell from here. How wonderful to be able to savor the earthiness of this harvest.
