The Great Ocean Road: Day 1

After our night in Torquay, we were ready to set out on the Great Ocean Road.  The road was carved out of Australia’s hilly south coast.  It is an engineering marvel, a jobs program built by veterans of the Great War who came home from Europe and couldn’t find work.

The road starts out snug up against the shore…past 50 km of almost continuous picture postcard beaches.

The ocean is the deepest blue we’ve ever seen.

At about 30 km, we passed the Aireys Point Lighthouse ...the spot closest to Tasmania on the entire Australian mainland.

At 50 km we reached the town of Lorne…a strip of motels and restaurants catering to tourists driving the Great Ocean Road.  It was also the place where the coastline changed.

The sandy beaches became more intermittent; replaced by rocky shorelines...

...and tall bluffs sticking out into the bays.
