Verde, Verde, Verde

When we first arrived in Pienza this Spring, it was gray, wet, and cold.  For a while, we thought we were still in Seattle.

Then, about a week ago, the sun came out, and...boy!...did things change fast.

Green everywhere.

All of a sudden, the fields are a riot of color.

We're not sure whether these are wildflowers or planted by farmers between semolina crops (wheat for pasta).

As we ride our bikes through the Val d'Orcia, we try and count the shades of green.  We've never been able to keep count.

Soon, that will all change.

Yesterday, while we were out riding, we saw our first poppies.

In a few weeks, the poppies will take over the fields...until the summer wheat crop goes in.

Update:

As they always do, the poppies did indeed take over the fields of Toscana in mid-May.

Back to original post:

We should have known spring was here.  This weekend is L'Eroica, a 145 km bike ride mostly over strada bianchi (gravel roads) and very hilly terrain.

In the heart of Pienza, workmen are transforming Piazza Pio into a formal garden...just for Spring Flower Week.

Yes, this is the same place featured in our blog post from September 4, 2017..."And You Thought Cheese Was for Eating."
