115 Degrees Fahrenheit!

We knew this day was going to be hot, so we were on the road by 5:45 am to beat the heat.  No diversions for sightseeing today; just straight from Point A to Point B.

A few km into the ride we crossed the border from Victoria state to South Australia.

A few hours later, we passed Mt. Schank the only bump we would see on the horizon all day.  It was the crater of another extinct volcano.

Right behind it was a beautiful Anglican church built in 1901…out in the middle of nowhere.

By 9:30 am it had started to heat up.  It seemed as warm as it had been the afternoon before when we pulled into Nelson (104o F).

A half hour later, the thermometer on Roger’s bike computer read 46oC.

That translates to 115oF…at 10:00 in the morning!  Do you know how hot 115oF is?

1)  A liter of water that lasts 30 km at normal temperatures is gone after only 8 km.
2)  The asphalt melts and turns slippery.
3)  Roger got blisters on the bottom of his feet even though his shoes never touched the pavement.

The next day the Adelaide newspaper headlined what we already knew.
