A Change of Scene

After four days of seeing nothing but this, all of a sudden, the landscape changed.

Large groves of tall, mature trees…

…surrounded by plush green vineyards…

…with clusters of grapes just starting to form.

We had reached Australian wine country.

For the first time in 300 km, we passed a house with a flower garden in full bloom.

And pulled into the town of Victor Harbor and a hotel that was a definite step up from our accommodations in the Coorang.

The next day we rolled out of Victor Harbor for what should have been our shortest and easiest day yet.  Two km out of town we hit a hill with a 13% grade, soon followed by a hill with 16% grade, then another 13%-er.

Soon, we hit a high valley and a 20 km stretch of rolling hills and gentle curves...the prettiest country we'd ridden through yet.

When we reached the "town" of Delamore (one building), we could have turned right and headed straight for Adelaide.  Not us.  We instead went left and headed for the ferry to Kangaroo Island.

  1. Wow, I don't envy some of the grades you hit on this leg of your journey. That's some tough bicycling!
